Rock Exotica Unicender
Since its creation by Morgan Thompson in 2005, the Unicender from Rock Exotica has been the most flexible tool for tree climbing. With the ability to be used in both Doubled Rope Technique (DdRT) and Single Rope Technique (SRT), the Unicender fits the way you like to climb like no other tool. The Unicender utilizes unique friction plates that allow it to advance easily with minimal friction, and virtually no “Sit Back,” giving you the most efficiency per stride. Descending is just as easy: by looping the rope around the plates in SRT as shown below. Additionally, the Unicender attaches conveniently mid-line.

Great device
I really like how compact the Unicender is… and stays compact even when descending/lomb walking. I have the after marker barrel and bottom wear plate installed by Mumford, so hopefully the plates wearing won’t be as much of a problem. We shall see!
Versatility
I have to say this device is great, it is not my primary choice for my main climb line but I will tell you for a secondary it is amazing. I carry a Rock Exotica unicender on my saddle at all times. When I make a weird redirect and need to use my tail as a second climb line I can just attach this bad boy and be on my way! Very fast and efficient. Especially if you get the capture kit and install it. Highly recommend as a needed tool for any serious arborist!
Hasn't Live up to Its Potential
The Unicender is REALLY cool. I want to love it. I want to like it...but there are too many other options out there, and the Unicender isn't intuitive enough to make up for it. The sheer number of aftermarket add-ons that exist for it are concerning, in that it would need them at all...having to loop the rope over the top of the device to descend in SRT is cumbersome, and the plates wear alarmingly fast. Again, I WANT to love it...but it just hasn't done it for me.
Bomber and great for spar work
The Uni is a tried and true device. It is super bomber and self adjusting, so it keeps simplicity at its height! It is an amazing device for spar work due to being short. It does not like thinner ropes though so follow the manufactures rope diameter recommendations.

takes some getting used to
had mine a few days, so far I like it, yet to really test it tho, can clip to chest harness and walk up a spar on spikes and it self tends, SRT rappel is smooth, Drt is a little rough but getting smoother as I get used to it. The Rock Exotica Unicender is worth the money.
