Rock Exotica Pirate WireEye Carabiner
The WireEye series of carabiners combines the utility of a standard carabiner with the safety and capability of a lanyard pin, or captive eye.
Details
The WireEye series of carabiners combines the utility of a standard carabiner with the safety and capability of a lanyard pin, or captive eye. The WireEye holds gear, lanyards and lines with enough resistance to help prevent gear from moving past the end of the carabiner, but releases easily when lifted up. When the potential for dangerous leverage or cross-loading can occur, the WireEye helps keep the carabiner oriented correctly, and the gear where it belongs.

Pairs great with the ART Positioner
Bought it to use as a captive carabiner with my ART Positioner 2 Swivel, and it has been perfect. I move back and forth between my upper and lower D rings a lot, and because the action of the Rock Exotica gates are opposite that of most, it makes it super easy.
No fumbling
Wire eye keeps carabiner from rotating in my rope runner vertec and works great when tending slack.
Awesome
I use these with my swivel. They always stay in place with the WireEye. I actually don’t mind how the gate opens opposite of some other carabiners. Easy to adjust to.
Great for my lanyard.
I use these on the end of my lanyard to attach to my belt. I like that the carabiner stays nicely oriented on the sewn eye of my lanyard, like permanent rope snaps do. When I want to remove the lanyard from a tree, If I am concerned about the carabiner getting stuck when pulling it through a crotch or whatever, I can easily remove the carabiner from the rope first, unlike rope snaps.
It's a carabiner
Love this on a lanyard. Stays oriented nicely and big gate that's easy to clip without seeing. Generally prefer RE carabiners on my lanyard as they can be opened with just the left thumb.
Favorite Lanyard Carabiner
The Rock Exotica gates, which open backwards from most traditional auto-lockers, are an acquired taste, and they aren't for everyone...but this carabiner has a perfect niche for tree climbers. If you keep your lanyard on your left hip, THIS Pirate WireEye is the best option for the adjuster side on your hip or lower D...for a left hand, opening or attaching it to a D on that side, it's much easier to operate. I don't use any other Rock Exotica's because standard gates are easier with my right hand, but this one will always live there. Super fast, very nice smooth gate, and the wire keeper won't ever let my adjuster get loaded wrong.
