Petzl Zigzag Mechanical Prusik
The Petzl Zigzag mechanical prusik for tree care allows the user to move around efficiently in a tree using classic tree climbing technique. The friction chain provides precision and fluidity when moving around. The pulley is mounted on sealed ball bearings to allow the slack to be taken up easily. Can be used on either doubled ropes or a single rope, providing great versatility. The lower attachment hole is fixed to ensure alignment of the device with the axis of the worker and to optimize grip.

Details
The ZIGZAG mechanical Prusik allows the user to move around efficiently in a tree using classic Prusik pulley systemtechnique. The friction chain provides precision and fluidity when moving around. The pulley is mounted on sealed ball bearings to allow the slack to be taken up easily. Can be used on either doubled ropes or a single rope, providing great versatility. The lower attachment hole is fixed to ensure alignment of the device with the axis of the worker and optimize grip.
Intuitive grip:
- technique identical to classic Prusik pulley system
- the device locks automatically on the rope once the friction chain extends
For efficient movement within the tree:
- rope feed is smooth and precise thanks to the release lever, allowing the user great control over his/her movements. Adjusting the pressure on this lever controls the speed of movement
- easy to take up slack, thanks to the pulley mounted on sealed ball bearings and the separated and curved side plates
- lower attachment hole with high
- efficiency swivel ensures stable and correct positioning of the mechanical Prusik and optimal rope glide through the device
Versatile:
- for use on either doubled ropes or a single rope, thanks to the Petzl CHICANE accessory, which offers more friction on the descent, and the KNEE ASCENT assemblies, which facilitate the ascent
- upper attachment hole for the rope end when using a doubled rope or for the CHICANE auxiliary braking device when usinga single rope. It has a flexible positioning ring that helps keep the connector oriented along its major axis
- auxiliary attachment hole for adding a Petzl ZILLON lanyard or connecting a second system
- Petzl ZIGZAG allows the user to work in compliance with the ANSI Z133 standard

Hello!
The Petzl Zigzag states in its instruction that it has a WLL of 140kg which is equal to 308.6 lbs.
So I would say you are good to go if you choose this device.
All around work horse
This device is the only real do everything mechanical for production work. Not mid line attachable but very reliable for both SRT and MRS, and is not bothered by sap. Very smooth and fun to climb with. Links will wear out eventually but takes a long time and a lot of hours in trees. Out side of comps this is hands down the best.
It's decent
I have always liked the zigzag and this newer version is fine. My only complaint is that it's much larger than the original version. I prefer the compact size of the old version, but I like the ability to climb srt or mrs on the newer one. Overall worth it.
Smooth but has its issues
The Petzl Zigzag Mechanical Prusik has had its set of problems since it was first released. Even in the past year petzl has issued a recall on models manufactured within a certain time frame for slipping on the line. It’s not midline attachable, so I would store it on a climbing line. However, with all of its faults some of the most fun I’ve had in trees has been bombing out on this thing. Incredibly smooth on drt and srt when paired with the chicane.
Must have
This is the must have in your arsenal. If you’re just beginning or been climbing for years the Petzl zigzag makes everything easier. No complaints about it
The best
This device is so much better than using a hitch and a pulley. It's super smooth and reliably grabs every time. The Petzl Zigzag version with the extra attachment point is a must have for me. That way I can slap on a chicane, throw a lanyard over my shoulder and connect to the extra attachment point, and I've got a quick SRT option for my go to climbing line. Not being midline attachable is a non-issue for me. Attach a pulley and biner to your rope bag and auto slide the zigzag down your climbing line as you pull your climbing line over your TIP. Not really any extra time once you get your systems streamlined.
Very reliable and easy to use.
This is the only mechanical prussik I've ever used. The Petzl Zigzag has worked like a dream. Currently using with a Rope Wrench and tether...Love it!
Super Fun
It is on the bulkier side compared to a standard paw pulley and hitch cord but it tends incredibly smooth, on all sizes of rope, I’ve used it on tachyon, tropical ivy, blaze, vortex, venom, hyper climb and blue moon and it handled all of them beautifully. Only drawback (which is arguable) is the Petzl Zigzag takes a little advanced planning when setting your rope. If they could make it mid line attachable it would be perfect.
Very user-friendly
The Zigzag is so user-friendly that it’s ridiculous. It’s incredibly intuitive and easy to climb with, tend, and descend on. I prefer to not have a swivel on the Zigzag, so it stays in the proper orientation when I want it to, then move it to a swivel on my bridge as I twist or turn to move around to another point in the tree. Buy a Petzl Zigzag, keep it on the rope, get another rope, and keep another Zigzag on it too. This also works well with the Chicane, which is easy to open and put on and off the Zigzag and rope, if switching back and forth from stationary rope climbing to any moving rope system or back to to stationary rope.
Fun and Smooth but Bulky
Ive been using the Petzl zigzag on and off now for about a month or so (with the Reon Rounds Tether and rope wrench for SRS)and overall i really enjoy climbing on it. i love how you can go from rope to rope with no adjustments and it runs super smooth on anything I've tried so far from km3 to kernamster to x-static. I have been climbing on the rope runner since 2013 or so, so this certainly seems bulky compared to what i am used to. It is also hard to descend the device while not weighted(the wrench makes this difficult). Its ability to be used SRS and DRT makes it pretty unique and overall i would highly suggest this for those coming from a rope wrench and hitch cord setup to something fully mechanical.
