The Good Rigging Control System, or GRCS, gives you the mechanical advantage you need to safely raise and lower large tree branches.

The GRCS was created by Greg Good of Wisconsin and is an essential tool for any arborist team that encounters large removals. When you combine its easy setup, lifting power, and tangle-free operation you truly get the ultimate system for lowering large limbs with the most control possible, especially when the site must be preserved from damage. Another great use of this tool is its side pulling power which comes in handy while working on those big storm damage jobs.

The mounting plate of the GRCS is mounted firmly to the trunk of the tree with a 20-foot cinch strap and is tightened with a 36-inch tensioning bar. The hinged side plates and 9 rubber pads allow for installation on a wide range of stem sizes while protecting the tree from damage. Once the bracket is installed the Harken 46 Arborist easily slides in and is held in place with a retaining pin.

In 2012 the system was upgraded to this winch with taller drum than the previous and it allows ½ to ¾ inch lowering line to be wrapped a full five times. This winch has a dead-lift rating of 3,000 lbs. and has two settings that provide both a 44:1 and 22:1 mechanical advantage. When you add in the self-tailing feature of this winch It becomes a breeze for a single ground person to safely lift, lower and lock off loads without tying knots. The aluminum rope break dissipates friction heat and features a welded 4-inch diameter tube that is large enough for an ice pack to be placed inside during extreme lowering situations to prevent rope glazing. With this aluminum break the GRCS has a Working Load Limit (WLL) of 2,000 lbs.

The GRCS includes the mounting plate, strapping, tension bar, and winch. There are many accessories available for the GRCS that extend its application and ease of use. This system is an investment that will allow for more work opportunity and quickly pays for itself. It is a good tool for crews without the use of a crane or when a jobsite restricts the use of large equipment.

    The bee's knees

Just like with any rigging, know the limits of your gear and the tree. This is SUCH an incredible device. We don't use it every day. We mostly use portawraps on the daily but when you need to lift however, boooooooy this does it in spades. It's like having a skid! The GRCS is quiet and you can carry it to the tree. It shines brightest in storm work and for tensioning speedlines.

    Solves so many problems

The simplicity of this device is impressive. A must have for complex removals and storm work. The drill adapter is also a game changer!

    Pays for itself

This device is like having two grounds guys its very versatile I’ve rigged broken tops whole trees and even used this for felling operations, its only recommended for 2,000lbs so make sure you know you green log weight chart or download one of the bazillion apps for it because things can break and go wrong fast if your not paying attention or following the guidelines. I fully recommend a full crew run down before sending it out into the field. It’s worth its price. Basically a crane in a box if used in the right application fish pole tech very vital to have the pulley or ring above the fareleeds!! I’d buy it again every time.

    Mixed feeling

I had wanted a GRCS for the past 10 years. A bought one at a quarter of the retail price and my thoughts are this: You need to have a tree that can withstand the force you are about to put onto it and if you do not distribute that force correctly, these are very dangerous. Make sure everyone on your crew takes turns getting familiar with this device. Setup your rigging first then install the rigging line and crank up to position then strap to the base of the tree. It is a tad difficult to install by yourself without the rigging line holding the mounting plate. It is nice to have when I need it but for $3300 you are better off purchasing the Hold Fast winch/bollard IMO. GRCS will do whatever it is you want it to do but there have been times I do not use it and use my rope jack and portawrap instead due to how bulky this is.

    Game Changer for small operations

I’ve used them at company’s in the past, it is sweet. No need to hook rope to the skid and have limited control. Finally bit the bullet and ordered one. Stoked to say the least
